AWS Snowcone

AWS Snowcone Overview

AWS Snowcone is the smallest, most portable, and rugged edge computing and data transfer device within the AWS Snow Family. It is designed to enable edge computing, storage, and data transfer, especially in remote or disconnected environments where internet bandwidth is limited or unavailable.

Key Features of AWS Snowcone

  1. Compact and Portable:
  • Size and Weight: About the size of a small lunchbox, weighing 4.5 pounds (2.1 kg).
  • Portability: Easy to transport to remote locations or areas with limited space.
  1. Storage Capacity:
  • Storage: Offers up to 8 TB of usable storage capacity for data transfer and edge computing tasks.
  1. Secure Data Handling:
  • Encryption: Data is automatically encrypted using 256-bit encryption keys managed by AWS Key Management Service (KMS).
  • Tamper-Evident: Designed to be tamper-evident and resistant to physical tampering.
  1. Edge Computing Capabilities:
  • Local Processing: Supports running AWS IoT Greengrass, allowing you to perform edge computing tasks such as data collection, processing, and machine learning inference directly on the device.
  • AWS Lambda: You can run AWS Lambda functions on the device for data filtering and transformation before transferring data to AWS.
  1. Data Transfer:
  • Efficient Transfer: Data can be transferred from the Snowcone device to AWS through a secure shipping process.
  • Offline Mode: Ideal for scenarios where internet connectivity is unreliable or non-existent.
  1. Connectivity:
  • Network Interfaces: Equipped with wired network interfaces for connecting to local networks and devices.

Use Cases for AWS Snowcone

  1. Remote Data Collection:
  • Ideal for collecting and processing data in remote locations, such as research outposts, ships, oil rigs, or field operations, where internet connectivity is limited.
  1. Edge Computing:
  • Perform edge computing tasks close to the data source to reduce latency and bandwidth usage. This is useful for real-time data processing and decision-making.
  1. Data Transfer:
  • Transfer data from remote sites to AWS for further processing and storage. Suitable for use cases like migrating data from edge locations to the cloud.
  1. Disaster Recovery:
  • Use as part of a disaster recovery plan to collect and transfer critical data from affected areas to AWS for safe storage and recovery.

How AWS Snowcone Works

  1. Request a Snowcone Device:
  • Order a Snowcone device through the AWS Management Console.
  1. Device Setup:
  • Upon receiving the device, connect it to your local network and power source.
  • Use the AWS OpsHub application to manage the device, including configuring network settings and managing data transfer.
  1. Data Transfer:
  • Copy your data to the Snowcone device using standard file transfer protocols.
  • You can also run edge computing tasks on the device using AWS IoT Greengrass and AWS Lambda.
  1. Return and Upload:
  • Once data transfer or processing is complete, ship the Snowcone device back to AWS using the provided shipping materials.
  • AWS will securely transfer the data from the device to your specified AWS storage service, such as Amazon S3.

Summary

AWS Snowcone is a versatile, portable, and rugged solution for edge computing and data transfer, particularly suited for environments with limited or no internet connectivity. With its compact size, robust security features, and edge computing capabilities, Snowcone enables efficient data collection, processing, and transfer to AWS, making it an ideal choice for remote operations and scenarios requiring local data processing.
